Fox Galleries is thrilled to be supporting Nigel Sense’s ‘Visitor Centre’, a solo exhibition at the Northern Centre for Contemporary Art (NCCA) in Darwin. This is the first institutional solo show for the Wollongong born, Darwin-based artist, after four solo exhibitions with Fox Galleries.

Nigel Sense has transformed the gallery space into a pastiche of a tourist hub, replacing tired mementos and souvenirs with an imaginary world, painted into reality. The exhibition of a dozen newly-commissioned, large-scale canvases, painted eskies, dinner plates, tea towels, and a family-sized camping tent is the tangible realisation of Sense’s original concept. Beautifully documented, the exhibition is accompanied by a publication, limited to 200 copies, available for purchase.

“Sense often emphasises the banal or the kitsch using imagery from popular and mass culture. But sometimes the choices he makes are deliberate and at other times they are not. Andrew Frost has described him as a deskilled painter, a label not denied by the artist. As his career has developed, he has wanted to celebrate the mistakes and not hide them. Is he therefore a deskilled Pop artist? Perhaps. He has consistently turned mass reproduction and the influence of the media into his subject matter, creating multi-media paintings on pie wrappers, shopping bags and tea towels, in a similar way that Eduardo Paolozzi and Robert Rauschenberg preferred their materials to be pre-loved.” – Michael Fox, 2022

All works are available for purchase through Fox Galleries. To register your interest or to request a full catalogue, please contact the gallery.
