Maggie Diaz was an American-born photographer who arrived in Melbourne in 1961. She quickly established herself as an important émigré artist by insightfully capturing her new surroundings as both an outsider and insider.
Diaz, a former showgirl in Blackstone’s Magic Show, picked up photography whilst working as a darkroom assistant in an advertising agency in the early 50’s. Diaz arrived in Australia at a time of few women photographers.
The Diaz Collection dates back to 1950s Chicago and the archive has been acquired by the State Library of Victoria, with work in the collections of the National Library of Australia and the National Gallery of Australia.
Diaz passed away in 2016.
