Anthony Breslin is an iconic Melbourne based artist who boasts over 50 solo exhibitions spanning 25 years both nationally and internationally.
His skill set includes painting, drawing, poetry, public speaking, art directing, live art performance, theatre performance, fashion design, furniture design, stage design and numerous large scale public art projects.
With an unyielding passion for cross cultural communication featuring symbols, ritual and performance, Anthony’s practice moves freely through the visual and performing arts spectrum and is unified by a focus on the human spirit.
In 2009 he undertook a three year project to design, build and operate The Breslin Gallery & Café in Carnegie, Melbourne fulfilling a dream he had held for many years. Soon after doors opened in 2012 it became a successful arts hub, cafe and community space. The venue thrived until Anthony was forced to sell in 2016 after being diagnosed with a rare form of Leukemia that required a complete bone marrow transplant.
The style and spirit displayed in Breslin’s work is inspired by tribal cultures from around the world with the playgrounds of his characters composed from blocks of colors, found objects, collage and organic lines applied à la Jackson Pollock. Using the vernacular of modernism, cubism, street art and illustration, his graphic works celebrate the myriad elements of contemporary urban life.
His works are proudly held in public and private collections in Australia, China, Austria, Switzerland, Thailand, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. Documentation of his live art performance ‘Trybe, An Opera in Paint’ is held in the collection of the National Gallery of Victoria.
